The human race is a very unique species that, regardless of what one does, is always looking for the collective; the collective at work, the collective in the family, the collective in social relations. But, although this search to live with other people is natural and we accept some standards of society very well – having an academic background, a job that offers a sense of “security”, career success, building a family, guaranteeing a retirement , etc. – we always hear about this other way of living life, that of being a nomad, so as to speak.

It was through a barista course and a trip to Ecuador that our individual ideals and goals were aligned with this style of detachment and independence that a nomadic life provides. We discovered a world of opportunities and infinite growth, it was not a conscious choice, the paths just opened up and we played along.

Of course, not everything is simple and looks like it has been photoshopped.  There are a thousand of challenges that we face daily, from the most common to the most unthinkable; visas, immigration, languages, climates, foreign currency, exchange rates, credit card issues, travel insurance, accommodation, luggage, and so on.

But in spite of this – for many this is enough not to take any risks and leave their comfort zone – nothing can begin to understand that our house is not limited to four walls and that our lives do not revolve only around our work, family, circles of friends. With each trip we take we learn more about life and human relationships. We get involved in different cultures that make us question our values and increasingly accept the new without any prejudice. We accept that right and wrong are relative but that everyone, in the end, is looking for the same things.

However,  not only do we learn from these relationships, but we also question ourselves about something very specific, which is communication. We are not just talking about the trivial, choosing what to eat or asking for information on how to get around. I repeat again when I said about seeking the collective. Nobody survives on the basics alone because it is too superficial for our development. We are more complete than this and knowing how to communicate, beyond what is necessary is the point that determines who we choose to be.

Nothing comes down to what is on the surface and, from my own experience, as a Brazilian who has always created obstacles to learn English, I know that neither gestures nor half spoken words will be enough to take advantage of what the world and people have to offer us.
